May 1999

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Southeastern Regional Office (SERO) of the American Friends
Service Committee (AFSC) we are writing to request input from monthly and
yearly meetings as we prepare for our strategic planning process later this
year.

AFSC, which began its work as an international humanitarian relief
organization in 1917, presently has nine regional program offices in the US,
in addition to its international and national program offices. Enclosed you
will find the AFSC mission statement and a description of its program
priorities, as well as an overview of the current programs administered by
SERO.

With your input and that from representatives from the communities in which
we work, SERO staff and committees, and the AFSC national office, we will be
able to develop a forward-looking plan in keeping with the AFSC mission , as
well as reflecting the unique concerns in our region.

We look forward to hearing what monthly and yearly meetings in the region
view as important regional concerns as we look at how we may shift the
emphasis of our current programs and modify how we do our work. To this
end, we have composed a short set of queries and would like your meeting to
consider them and send written responses. In addition, we would like to
begin more active communication with meetings and would appreciate your
meeting designating a contact person to whom we could send information from
the region in the future.

We hope you will take the time to share your thoughts as we value highly the
input of all Friends in our region. We hope to compile meeting responses
before the summer's end and would, therefore, be very grateful if you could
possibly consider these queries within the next couple of months.

Please feel free to contact us, your Yearly Meeting representative, or the
staff of SERO. A list of addresses and phone numbers is enclosed.

In the Spirit,

Daryl Bergquist, Crystal Gaines
Co-Clerks, SERO Executive Committee
