FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 28, 2001 Contact: John Haigis 215/241-7056 AFSC BEGINS CAMPAIGN TO AID ANGOLANS WITH "KIDS TO KIDS" PROJECT PHILADELPHIA, PA - The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) today announced the start of a campaign to raise money for food and medicine for the two million refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) in the war-torn West African nation of Angola. The campaign, with its launching date coinciding with Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season, runs through May 31 and begins with a project called "Kids to Kids". The "Kids to Kids" project aims to interactively engage schools, churches, mosques, synagogues, civic groups, families and individuals in learning about the circumstances that contribute to Angola's on-going civil war, and in a show of concern for the people of Angola. "The 'Kids to Kids' project is an opportunity to join contemplation to action and support those who are suffering," said Carlos Mejia, director of the AFSC's Emergency and Material Assistance Program (EMAP). Through the project, EMAP will gather and send to Angolan children living in camps "kids kits" containing a small stuffed toy, a small ball, a box of crayons or chalk, a pen, a small pad of paper, a bar of bath soap, a washcloth, and a personal note and photo of the giver(s). Angola's twenty-five year civil war has intensified in the past few years. The United Nations estimates that since 1988 more than 1.8 million people have had to leave their homes and are now living in internally displaced person and refugee camps. Although Angola is rich in mineral wealth, including diamonds and oil, the larger society does not benefit from these riches. AFSC has been active in Africa for many years. Through its Quaker International Affairs Representatives (QIARs), AFSC is supporting the building of a civil society movement for peace in Angola which is led by a coalition of churches. People are asked to send monetary donations or prepared kits to the Emergency and Material Assistance Program Service Center, 601 Main Street, New Windsor, Maryland, 21776, or to the nearest AFSC collection center. To ensure that each kit contains the same things, participants are asked to include only the items on the kit list. Monetary donations may also be made by calling 1-888-588-2372, ext. 1. For a copy of the kit ingredients, or for additional information contact Carlos Mejia at (215) 241-7283/Jason Erb at (215) 241-7041 or log on to the AFSC web site at www.afsc.org. -30- The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the Quaker belief in the worth of every person and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice. Reporting period -- (a) Jan '00 - Dec '00 (b) Jun '00 - May '01 (c) other (specify) ___________ 2. "Member" In the Friends manner of speaking, "member" and "regular attender" commonly have distinctive meanings. In the past, SAYMA has not given particular significance to the distinction between members and attenders. The meaning of "members," whether they're distinguished from "regular attenders," and the Quaker meaning of these words, are matters for the meetings and worship groups to discern. For this question, please state: (a) Do you make a distinction between "members" and "regular attenders?" [ ]yes [ ]no (b) If you make a distinction, does "becoming a member" consist of going through a procedure described in A Guide to Our Faith & Our Practice? [ ]yes [ ]no (c) If you make a distinction in some other way, please state briefly what distinguishes members and regular attenders in your group. _________ 3. "Regular Attender" (a) In your meeting/worship group, does this mean (approximately): "one who comes to meeting often, but hasn't become a member through a procedure described in SAYMA's Guide to Faith & Practice ?" [ ]yes [ ]no (b) If not, please state briefly what you mean by "regular attender." ____________ 4. (a) Marriage or ceremony of commitment, under your meeting's care, of a member or attender at your meeting _____ (b) Marriage or ceremony of commitment, not under your meeting's care, of a member or attender at your MM/PM/WG _____ (c) Marriage or ceremony of commitment, under your meeting's care, of a couple not regularly attending the meeting _____ (d) Birth or adoption of a child to/by parent(s) attending your meeting _____ (e) Death of a member/attender at your MM/PM/WG _____ (f) Friend attending your MM/PM/WG transferred membership to your meeting or caring meeting _____ (g) Friend formerly attending your MM/PM/WG transferred membership out of your meeting or caring meeting (h) Attender at your MM/PM/WG became a member of your meeting or caring meeting _____ (i) New attender began coming regularly to your MM/PM/WG _____ (j) Regular attender stopped attending your MM/PM/WG _____ 5. Count of Individuals -- (a) SAYMA follows the practice of membership being in monthly meetings, but not in preparative meetings and worship groups. Therefore, to avoid duplicate SAYMA counts, you're asked to do the following: Monthly Meetings -- please count members of your meeting even if they don't attend it. See **notes below [1]-[4], for some situations like this. -- please count separately any members of non-SAYMA monthly meetings Preparative Meetings and Worship Groups -- name of caring Meeting, if any _____________ -- please count only regular attenders and members of non-SAYMA monthly meetings (b) Please count each person only once! For this question, to avoid duplicate counts within your group -- -- a regular attender is "one who comes to meeting often, but hasn't become a member through a procedure described by SAYMA's Guide to Faith & Practice, and isn't a member of a meeting in another yearly meeting." -- if a SAYMA meeting counts a person as a "member," please do not also count her/him as a "regular attender" because, for example, this person hardly ever misses First Day. -- if you don't distinguish between "members" & "regular attenders," please choose one line to write on, but not both. (c) How many adults attending your meeting are -- -- Members? ____ -- Regular Attenders? ____ -- Members of a MM in another YM? ____ (d) How many under 18 attending your meeting are -- -- Members? ____ -- Regular Attenders? ____ -- Members of a MM in another YM? ____ (e) Altogether, how many members of your Monthly Meeting are -- [1] non- or rarely-attending, [2] attending another SAYMA MM, [3] attending a SAYMA PM or WG, or [4] attending in another YM? ____ (f) Grand Total -- Sub-total for members _____ Sub-total for members in another YM _____ Sub-total for regular attenders _____ Add up these three numbers, and enter it as Grand Total of Individuals ______ This number should approximate what you think of as your "meeting size."
