From CIsland at aol.com Sat Oct 1 14:40:01 2005 From: CIsland at aol.com (CIsland at aol.com) Date: Sat, 1 Oct 2005 14:40:01 EDT Subject: [saymaListserv] Proposal to change SAYMA's Listserv Message-ID: <1fd.b689388.30703201@aol.com> The following is a "bulletin" from the SAYMA Ad Hoc Committee on Electronic Communications. It is not an invitation to discuss the proposal on the SAYMA Listserv. Good Yearly Meeting order is for it to be discussed within Meetings and Worship Groups for Meetings' discernment process in preparation for the Yearly Meeting's discernment when it meets next. (However, no punishments will occur if there is discussion on the listserv.) All Meetings and WG's should have either a contact person for the ad hoc committee or a Representative to the YM Representative Meeting, or both jointly, who should shepherd the MMs', WGs' considerations of the proposal. The proposal to form three SAYMA listserv's, as quoted below was presented to the Representative Meeting a month ago. There was some brief discussion of the proposal in the Rep Meeting and Clerk Kristi announced that the committee is authorized to distribute the proposal to MM's & WG's for feedback because the committee's charge as approved a year ago says so. . Bill Reynolds, Clerk SAYMA Ad Hoc Committee on Electronic Communications SAYMA Ad Hoc Committee on Electronic Communications Report and Proposal to 9-10-05 Representative Meeting PREAMBLE to the PROPOSAL: Concerns that drive the proposal for three listservs, (not saying the following covers all of the concerns): 1. For some SAYMA Friends a relatively high volume of messages in their inboxes violates their interest in living simply. Consequently it annoys them to be forced to look at the subject lines in their inboxes and dispose of the entries. These Friends have expressed to the committee a desire to receive only the bare minimum of announcements specific to the life and work of the Yearly Meeting, - to be able to choose what they receive in their inboxes. 2. Some SAYMA Friends experience joy at the volume of notices and discussions about issues of concern to Friends. These Friends have expressed to the committee how much they enjoy inspiration, information and edification in reading the posts from Friends with whom they might otherwise have little or no contact - and getting information, thoughts and ideas that they otherwise might not see or hear. 3. Some SAYMA Friends have expressed an interest in reading and sending information, thoughts and opinions on Friends concerns but they are "turned off" or offended by the caustic or harsh "tone" by which some contributors sometimes write their posts. They would prefer that, although divergent - even opposing - opinions are expressed, such would be expressed in a F/friendly manner of speech. Some feel that sometimes there has been "tone" of speech that violates Friends values and testimonies and should not ever appear in a Friends' sponsored publication. Suggesting three listserv's with the following proposed names: 1. SAYMA DISCUSSION LISTSERV GUIDELINES FOR CONTENT: This list is for the SAYMA community to discuss general issues of concern to Quakers. (For further information about Friends' concerns see Quaker.org). This list is especially for those who like electronic back and forth discussion about views, opinions, etc. Please compose your postings to this list to reflect the fundamental Quaker value that 'there is that of God in Everyone'. When responding to another post, respond to that of God in the author or subject of that post. This means express your perspective sincerely without passing judgement on the other's motives, character, intelligence or integrity. Sometimes it is good to allow time to pass for seasoning your thoughts before posting a response. ELDERING GUIDELINES: Form a group of four or five "elders" from those who read the list regularly and appear to have skills in discernment. Ask them to "step in" if a/some subscriber(s) post inappropriate material or excessive numbers of posts. When someone posted something with inappropriate content or tone, elder(s) are advised to email directly to the person who sent the message and suggest in their future postings they use more tender language. Elders may, from time to time, feel a sense that a remnder for what and how we speak on this listserv needs to be sent to the whole listserv, either near the time when an offense has occurred or later. Elders are advised to be mindful that some issues will be resolved without their intervention. This is a good thing. If listserv participants make a mistake occasionally, it does not necessarily have to be pointed out to them. If an individual repeatedly violates the listserv guidelines despite repeated eldering, the listserv elders should consult with each other and reach unity before asking the listserv administrator to remove him/her from the list. "ONE LINER" TO APPEAR AT THE BOTTOM OF EVERY POST TO THIS LIST: "This list is for the SAYMA community to discuss issues of concern to Quakers. (For further information about Friends' concerns see Quaker.org)" WELCOME NOTICE TO EVERYONE WHEN THEY JOIN THIS LIST: This list is especially for those who like electronic back and forth discussion about views, opinions, etc. Please compose your postings to this list to reflect the fundamental Quaker value that "there is that of God in Everyone." This means express your perspective sincerely without passing judgement on the other's motives, character, intelligence or integrity. Sometimes it is good to allow time to pass for seasoning your thoughts before posting a response. 2. SAYMA IMP^O^ Bulletin Service: This listserv is to continue the current IMP^O^ Bulletin Service exactly as currently operated by the SAYMA Administrative Assistant without any non-SAYMA announcements or any discussion. (The latter two functions to be covered by the other two listservs.) 3. GENERAL INTEREST ANNOUNCEMNTS GUIDELINES FOR CONTENT OF GENERAL INTEREST ANNOUNCEMENTS LIST: This list is for posting announcements about events, information, opinion and information about action opportunities related to Friends' concerns. (For further information about Friends' concerns see Quaker.org). To include such things as: (a) events happening around SAYMA region or nationally. (b) articles, publications, and websites of interest - For example: "FCNL has posted an analysis of the Iraq war budget....." (c) action opportunities such as writing congress, peace demonstrations, etc. Appropriate responses to announcements on this listserv are to be questions of clarification about details, additional planning information, e.g, time, place, topic and contact information, etc. Any responses other than these particular types of responses are to be posted on the SAYMA DISCUSSION LISTSERV. GUIDELINES FOR "MONITORING" OF GENERAL INTEREST ANNOUNCEMENTS LIST: Form a group of four or five "elders" from those who read the list regularly and appear to have skills in discernment. Ask them to "step in" if a/some subscriber(s) post inappropriate material or excessive numbers of posts. One example of what to say: "If those who have been following this conversation would like to continue, it seems more appropriate to move it to the Discussion listserv." If a subscriber persists in deliberately posting inappropriate material or posting excessive numbers of posts after being appropriately eldered they are subject to removal from the list. WELCOME NOTICE TO EVERYONE WHEN THEY JOIN THIS LIST: This list is for posting announcements about events, information, opinion and information about action opportunities related to Friends' concerns. (For further information about Friends' concerns see Quaker.org). Appropriate responses to announcements on this listserv are to be questions of clarification about details, additional planning info: time, place, topic and contact information. GEARAN Geneva, N.Y. "...Obviously the armed forces and the Peace Corps serve the national interest, but they do so in fundamentally different ways. Making this distinction clear - letting the world know that the Peace Corps is an independent entity - has been a basic tenet of American policy for decades. Unfortunately, this line has been blurred. In August, the military began promoting a recruitment program that allows soldiers, after a period of active and reserve duty, to fulfill their commitment by serving in the Peace Corps. By 2007, about 4,300 recruits will be eligible for this option. How did this happen? Three years ago, a provision for this enlistment incentive was inserted in a defense authorization bill and enacted into law without hearings or any apparent consultation with Peace Corps officials. However well-intentioned, this provision unwittingly abandoned longstanding policy that is essential to the Peace Corps mission and the personal safety of individual volunteers...." The Mythic Imagination Institute has posted different folks' impressions of the event they sponsored on "War, Peace and the American Imagination" in Atlanta, GA last month. Having been there, I can say the article does a wonderful job of recreating the feeling as well as the content, of the event. Message-ID: <6138846.1130439668144.JavaMail.root@mswamui-blood.atl.sa.earthlink.net> Good news from FCNL: Your lobbying played a key role in persuading Congress this week to agree to eliminate all funding for the nuclear “bunker buster,’ effectively rejecting for the second year in a row the president’s request to develop a new generation of nuclear weapons. The thousands lobby visits, letters, emails, faxes, and phone calls that you helped organized helped persuade members of Congress to eliminate this dangerous nuclear bomb that could have killed over one million people. FCNL learned last evening that Congress has agreed to eliminate funding for the nuclear "bunker buster" in the energy and water appropriations bill conference committee. Defeating the bunker buster two years in a row shows how little support new nuclear weapons have in Congress. Please email your members of Congress at http://capwiz.com/fconl/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=8168586 or call them at one of their offices to thank them for not funding the bunker buster. I deeply mourn the loss of the Women's Center. I do not wish to have to mourn the loss of Minga as well. Please hold her in the Light of the Holy Spirit in your Meetings and worship groups. Janet Minshall From: MingaBorne at aol.com Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2005 22:38:48 EST Subject: women's health Years ago, Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer. Her symptoms were inconclusive, and she was treated for everything under the sun until it was too late. This blood test finally identified her illness but alas, too late. She wrote a book to heighten awareness. Gene Wilder is her widower. KATHY'S STORY: this is the story of Kathy West As all of you know, I have Primary Peritoneal Cancer. This cancer has only recently been identified as its OWN type of cancer, but it is essentially Ovarian Cancer. Both types of cancer are diagnosed in the same way, with the "tumor marker" CA-125 BLOOD TEST, and they are treated in the same way - surgery to remove the primary tumor and then chemotherapy with Taxol and Carboplatin. Having gone through this ordeal, I want to save others from the same fate. That is why I am sending this message to you and hope you will print it and give it or send it via E-mail to everybody you know. One thing I have learned is that each of us must take TOTAL responsibility for our own health care. I thought I had done that because I always had an annual physical and PAP smear, did a monthly Self-Breast Exam, went to the dentist at least twice a year, etc. I even insisted on a sigmoidoscopy and a bone density test last year. When I had a total hysterectomy in 1993, I thought that I did not have to worry about getting any of the female reproductive organ cancers. LITTLE DID I KNOW. I don't have ovaries (and they were HEALTHY when they were removed), but I have what is essentially ovarian cancer. Strange, isn't it? These are just SOME of the things our Doctors never tell us: ONE out of every 55 women will get OVARIAN or PRIMARY PERITONEAL CANCER.The "CLASSIC" symptoms are an ABDOMEN that rather SUDDENLY ENLARGES and CONSTIPATION and/or DIARRHEA. I had these classic symptoms and went to the doctor. Because these symptoms seemed to be "abdominal", I went to a gastroenterologist. He ran tests that were designed to determine whether there was a bacteria infection; these tests were negative, and I was diagnosed with "Irritable Bowel Syndrome". I guess I would have accepted this diagnosis had it not been for my enlarged abdomen. I swear to you, it looked like I was 4-5 months pregnant! I therefore insisted on more tests. They took an X-ray of my abdomen; it was negative. I was again assured that I had Irritable Bowel Syndrome and was encouraged to go on my scheduled month-long trip to Europe. I couldn't wear any of my slacks or shorts because I couldn't get them buttoned, and I KNEW something was radically wrong. I INSISTED on more tests, and they reluctantly) scheduled me for a CT-Scan (just to shut me up, I think). This is what I mean by "taking charge of our own health care." The CT-Scan showed a lot of fluid in my abdomen (NOT normal). Needless to say, I had to cancel my trip and have FIVE POUNDS of fluid removed, but NOTHING compared to what was ahead of me). Tests revealed cancer cells in the fluid. Finally, finally, finally, the doctor ran a CA-125 blood test, and I was properly diagnosed. I HAD THE CLASSIC SYMPTOMS FOR OVARIAN CANCER, AND YET THIS SIMPLE CA-125 BLOOD TEST HAD NEVER BEEN RUN ON ME, not as part of my annual physical exam and not when I was symptomatic. This Is an inexpensive and simple blood test! PLEASE, PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FEMALE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO INSIST ON A CA-125 BLOOD TEST EVERY YEAR AS PART OF THEIR ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAMS. Be forewarned that their doctors might try to talk them out of it, saying, IT ISN'T NECESSARY." Believe me, had I known then what I know now, we would have caught my cancer much earlier (before it was a stage 3 cancer). Insist on the CA-125 BLOOD TEST; DO NOT take "NO" for an answer! The normal range for a CA-125 BLOOD TEST is between zero and 35. MINE WAS 754. (That's right, 754!). If the number is slightly above 35, you can have another done in three or six months and keep a close eye on it, just as women do when they have fibroid tumors or when men have a slightly elevated PSA test (Prostatic Specific Antigens) that helps diagnose prostate cancer. Having the CA-125 test done annually can alert you early, and that's the goal in diagnosing any type of cancer - catching it early. Do you know 55 women? If so, at least one of them will have this VERY AGGRESSIVE cancer. Please, go to your doctor and insist on a CA-125 test and have one EVERY YEAR for the rest of your life. And forward this message to every woman you know, and tell all of your female family members and friends. Though the median age for this cancer is 56, (and, guess what, I'm exactly 56), women as young as 22 have it. Age is no factor. A NOTE FROM THE RN: Well, after reading this, I made some calls. I found that the CA-125 test is an ovarian screening test equivalent to a man's PSA test prostate screen (which my husband's doctor automatically gives him in his physical each year and insurance pays for it). I called the general practitioner's office about having the test done. The nurse had never heard of it. She told me that she doubted that insurance would pay for it. So I called Prudential Insurance Co., and got the same response. Never heard of it - it won't be covered. I explained that it was the same as the PSA test they had paid for my husband for years. After conferring with whomever they confer with, she told me that the CA-125 would be covered. It is $75 in a GP's office and $125 at the GYN's. This is a screening test that should be required just like a PAP smear (a PAP smear cannot detect problems with your ovaries). And you must insist that your insurance company pay for it. Gene Wilder and Pierce Brosnan (his wife had it, too) are lobbying for women's health issues, saying that this test should be required in our physicals, just like the PAP and the mammogram. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO SEND THIS OUT Minga You cannot buy the revolution. You cannot make the revolution. You can only be the revolution. It is in your spirit or it is nowhere.
