New Book on White Privilege
featuring writing by Donna Bivens
Women's Theological Center announces the release of
Flipping the Script: White Privilege and Community Building

Flipping the Script is a book designed for people who work in=20
communities to identify and address issues of white=20
privilege, oppression, racism and power as they play=20
out in their work. It is for community builders, grant=20
makers, technical assistance providers and others=20
who are trying to develop more equitable and=20
thoughtful partnerships with community residents and=20
organizations. =20
The book is in four major sections. The first=20
section defines key terms, reviews the book's
premises, and analyzes early responses to Hurricane=20
Katrina to illustrate white privilege and racism in=20
action at multiple levels. The second section=20
goes=20
into depth about four key concepts: community=20
building, racism, internalized racism, and white=20
privilege. The third section applies these=20
concepts to=20
community/foundations partnerships specifically. It=20
addresses interventions, evaluation and multiracial=20
coalitions and partnerships. The fourth=20
section=20
includes a chapter about doing one=92s own work on=20
white privilege, written primarily for white people, and=20
a summary chapter with recommendations for the=20
field.=20

community building work. An analysis of community=20
building through the lens of white privilege suggests=20
many places in which we might do our work=20
differently. It also questions the most basic premises=20
of this work. We assume that the readers of this=20
monograph, like us, are interested in questioning=20
these premises - to more clearly see white privilege=20
