JUST REMNANTS: PIECING A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY IN THE SOUTHERN MOUNTAINS
July 16-19, 2009 Arthur Morgan School, Celo.

A conference working in the tradition of Isaiah's "just
remnant," justice to the human community and crucially, the bioregion. At
the end of the warm, stable, Holocene period, the earth is entering a "long
emergency," climate change accelerating species extinction, with potentially
rapid warming. Embracing these trying times, join us in creating a remnant
“quilt” of just, sustainable, hopeful practices to preserve Katuah. The
conference will feature presentations, roundtable with representatives from
a broad range of bioregional organizations, experiential exercises, and
field trips, including old growth forest remnant. Keynote by Thomas Rain
Crowe, who will also headline a poetry reading and contradance Saturday
night with local musicians. Food will be local, vegetarian, mostly organic,
and fabulous. Topics explored include:

ECOJUSTICE

§ the land ethic, wildlife corridors, stream buffers, healing forests

VIABLE SMALL TOWNS and RURAL PLACES

§ sustainable agriculture, cooperative enterprises and small business
development, distributed energy

PLACE-BASED CULTURAL REMNANTS

§ Cherokee keepers of traditions

*	Appalachian farmers and crafters.
