Dear Friends:
We have just learned from the Steering Committee of “Heeding God’s Call: A
Gathering on Peace”—a national ecumenical and interfaith gathering on peace
hosted by Quakers, Mennonites and Brethren—that registration for this
important conference on the churches’ witness for peace and justice is less than
half of what was expected. Many denominations had been expected to appoint
delegates, but, evidently, many of them did not follow through. So the
conference is opening the doors to any interested persons of faith to attend this
conference at the 4th & Arch Street Meeting House on January 13-17.
FGC worked hard to insure that all yearly meetings in North American would
be able to appoint at least a couple delegates, and we hope that all of them
have been able to do so. But now there is an admittedly last-minute
opportunity for any Friend or person of faith to join the conference. Friends are
invited to participate in one of two ways: 1) register for all the sessions and
pay the $300 registration fee (scholarships are available, especially for
those under age 40) or 2) attend one or both of the two public sessions on TUE
and WED evenings featuring inspiring addresses by nationally prominent
speakers. Voluntary contributions will be accepted at the door for these public
In addition, ALL Friends are warmly encouraged to participate in the public
witness against illegal sales of hand guns in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Information about the public witness is attached. For conference information and
registration, go to _http://www.peacegathering2009.org/_
(http://www.peacegathering2009.org/) .
Here is the line-up of speakers at 4th & Arch Street Meeting where the
plenary sessions will be held:
TUE 7:30-9:00PM Ched Meyers, “The Radical Nonviolent Witness of Jesus”
WED 7:30-9:00PM

Alexie Torres Fleming, “The Intersection of Faith and Practice”
Please consider participating in this historic event.
