Subject: [Sayma-Announce] FW: AFC Response to HB56

Apologies if I’m using the wrong list; this is the one that pops up on my
Outlook. This is our local Alabama Faith Council’s response to HB56, the
anti-immigration bill of Alabama.

Response to H.B. 56 (Immigration Legislation)

The Alabama Faith Council, a diverse coalition of various faith traditions,
exists to consult and work with each other to improve the lives of all within
the State of Alabama. – from AFC Purpose Statement.

As communities of faith we have come to live in Alabama by means of our
ancestral immigration; we acknowledge that the extension of hospitality to
today’s immigrants must overcome the prejudice of possession and power created
by our current immigration laws.

The people of Alabama hold family as a sacred entity, yet this legislation
requires separation and brokenness among many immigrant families who come to us
with a strong religious faith and work ethic. These hardships being placed on
many families are unjust. We believe responsible stewardship of the resources of
the State of Alabama is paramount to maintaining the well being of all families
and people that reside in this state. We hold that federal legislation rather
than any state-by-state remedies can more effectively address these matters.

The guiding principles of our faith traditions call us to acknowledge the
command of God to welcome and show hospitality to the stranger sojourning among
us and that all human beings have value and are part of God’s good creation.
People of faith are called to promote peace and reconciliation.

In the spirit of wisdom, charity and justice, we call for foresight to respond
faithfully to the needs of all people in Alabama and work for a system that
breaks down the walls that separate us and allows all God’s people to exercise
freedom of religion without fear of reprisal.

For these and other reasons, we do not support the current immigration
legislation.
