Friends,

The news for this week has mostly been about “how to protect ourselves from THOSE people”. Yet little is said about the root causes of the violence that seems to be spilling out of the Middle East & North Africa in Europe and even sub Saharan Africa. AFSC has been documenting one of the root causes.

The AFSC report, below, shows me how Israel’s military is planting new seeds of violence by arresting and detaining Palestinian children at an ever increasingly young age. . . Now as young as 6 years old. Imagine how traumatized they must feel as well as how their families and friends must feel as well. Please share AFSC’s message with your social media lists, so they, too, can know what really happens with some of the billions of dollars America gives to the Israeli military each year.

Ilise,

Earlier this month the No Way to Treat a Child Campaign <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=TU5m3kdMkVsgRc1iofGxArcGSXTx9Fek> released a new film called “Detaining Dreams.” Production of the film was sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee and Defense for Children International–Palestine Section.

Detaining Dreams <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=WG53tNvvx3QwtiORLaqk%2BbcGSXTx9Fek> tells the story of four Palestinian children and their families as they undergo the ordeal of Israeli military detention. The film calls attention to the injustices in the Israeli military court system and the need to end the current practices of detaining and trying children.

Action is needed now. Please watch the film and share it with others <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=TpJkfJVUf95OomkEndIs2rcGSXTx9Fek> in support of the No Way to Treat a Child Campaign.

According to the Palestinian prisoners rights group Addameer, 177 Palestinian children were arrested by the Israeli military and police in October. Many of these children will be tried in military courts where their basic rights are denied. And many will be separated from their families, subjected to physical and verbal abuse, and coerced into false confessions while in detention. Hundreds of other children have been detained temporarily and released.

While the age of criminal accountability for Palestinians is 12, over the last month Israeli police and military forces have repeatedly detained children as young as six years old. These young children are held at police stations for hours and questioned without their parents or a lawyer informed or present. The detention of children under 12 years old is illegal under Israeli law, and these children are eventually released, but not until after they have been traumatized.

In addition, in October the Israeli military imposed administrative detention orders on three 17-year-old youth from Jerusalem, which means they can be held for a period of three months, renewable, without charge or trial. This is the first time that children have been placed in administrative detention since 2009.

Many of the children arrested and detained, particularly those in Jerusalem, are detained in night raids where the police take them from their beds in the middle of the night. “Night Raid <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=fsAloM3v8n41Vlo5ayccK7cGSXTx9Fek> ,” a traveling art exhibit highlighting the impact of night raids on Palestinian communities, is also available for display from the No Way to Treat a Child Campaign. All of these abusive practices must end.
