The AFSC is asking for an end to the 10 year old blockade of Gaza. Please consider supporting the AIDA on this important humanitarian cause.

AFSC staff and partners in Chicago protest the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Take action: Call for an end to the Gaza blockade. <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Ymc7J%2FK6NE66SDHj65OFrXVzWiBkgk7l> Photo: AFSC
Gaza remains in ruins. Homes have not been reconstructed. Hospitals and schools have not been repaired or rebuilt. Water and electrical infrastructure have not been fixed. The Israeli blockade makes rebuilding and moving forward nearly impossible.
The blockade must end – join AFSC and other international organizations as we demand change. <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=%2FCLY%2FcIes%2BsgTPElley9%2F8u2rfTnm8k7>
The above petition was put together by the Association of International Development Agencies (AIDA), which is the coordinating body for international organizations working in the occupied Palestinian territory. Reaching agreement on policy approaches can be difficult, but the diverse organizations that belong to AIDA agree: We need to end the blockade in Gaza.
Groups are speaking out because, despite promises made by Israel and the international community at the end of the 2014 attacks on Gaza, Israeli policies toward Gaza have not changed. As a result,
* Less than 10 percent of the 11,000 homes completely destroyed during the attack have been rebuilt, and more than 75,000 Palestinians in Gaza remain homeless.
* Electricity is only provided for six hours per day in most areas.
* Businesses are shuttered due to a lack of imports needed to produce goods and lack of access to external markets because exports are banned.
* Unemployment is over 40 percent, the highest rate in the world.
* Children attend crowded schools where they are taught in two or three shifts because destroyed schools can’t be rebuilt and new schools can’t be created to accommodate a growing population.
This situation is unconscionable, and it is only getting worse. Over the last few months, Israel has taken steps to further restrict the movement of people in and out of Gaza and has further limited imports to the region.
Israel and the U.S. government both justify the blockade by saying that it ensures Israeli security. But does it? The blockade has now been in place for 10 years during which time Gaza has been repeatedly attacked. Neither Israel nor the U.S. government can claim that Israel is now more secure. Peace and reconciliation are not being predicted; rather most officials warn of another imminent attack.
Even if it could be argued that the blockade is providing security for Israelis, what is the cost of that security? Security for Israelis cannot justify the collective punishment of Palestinians and the violation of their basic human rights.
The blockade is an illegal, failed, and destructive policy, and it is past time for change. Take action today to demand that change. <http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=GyPdb%2BVk8v%2F7qqlzy1%2B6CnVzWiBkgk7l>
Only an end to the blockade, Israel’s occupation, and respect for rights will result in sustainable peace and security.
