Thanks a bunch--I'm back.  Repairman said the problem is currently fixed,
but ultimately unfixable:  squirrels.  They gnaw the wire coverings all the
time, he said.  Phone company thinks there's some squirrel nutritional need
met by phone-wire insulation!
