The book was begun during my last years as clerk of Criminal Justice Task Force for American Friends Service Committee.
AFSC had done earlier publications on prison reform. CJTF and the national Community Relations Unit (CRU), of which CJTF is a part, revised the whole realm of concern and updated its thinking and its recommendations, both to AFSC itself and to the whole justice advocacy community.
This book is an outgrowth of that process. Laura and Harmon wrote the text, which went through several rounds of review and comment with CJTF members, both in person at our meetings in Philadelphia and via email.
This is a "strong indictment of the current prison system, which traces the history and features of our penal system, offers strong ethical and moral assessments of it, and lays out a whole new paradigm of criminal justice based on restorative justice and reconciliation. The book puts forward a 12-point plan for immediate changes.
"Beyond Prisons opens a long-needed national dialogue on our responsibilities as citizens and as a nation to provide remediation rather than mere retributive incarceration, answerable to the common good and the justice of God."
